Not realizing this, I was a bit too hasty when snapping the bezel off of the case, and cracked the corner of the display. There are then three diffuser panels between the backlight box and the panel to evenly illuminate the display. The LED backlight consists of ten LEDs in two strips inside of the surprisingly thick main case, surrounded by card paper that lines the case to provide even illumination. The LCD panel sits directly against the front plastic bezel, and has no metal frame. Instead, the electronics are in a separate plastic case that is seamlessly mounted to the back of the TV. The screen and backlight are not housed in a metal frame behind the plastic case. This would have worked, but it is a much different design from florescent backlit of the old model. The model of Sceptre TV that I bought was no longer made, so I ordered one of their newer LED backlit models for $130 from Amazon. Before that, though, I tried to replace the entire display. In the end I simply entered the part number written on the board into eBay and got a replacement for $23. ![]() At least one capacitor and I think all four diodes on the board had failed. It would be nice if TV manufactures had a DPMS option in their software it's not clear to me why they don't, unless they really just don't want people buying TVs when they have a computer monitor division trying to sell them monitors.Īfter years of operation, the power supply on the TV failed on me. TVs also tend not to support DPMS, which means that the display can't be made to simply go to sleep and quickly wake up when needed like a monitor can. Most (if not all) TVs turn off their USB ports when they're off, require a good five to ten seconds to power on the Pi itself requires an addition minute and a half or more to boot up all the way into Chromium and display the page. I should mention that a side effect of using a TV instead of a monitor is that you're going to have to leave the TV on all the time. As a bonus, it also had a USB port to power the Pi. It was $220, and had the important details of being 1080p, relatively thin, and having all ports aim downwards instead of outwards. I spent a few weeks waiting for a cheap monitor to show up on deals sites before finally just buying a 32" Spectre brand TV from Amazon. More importantly, you're going to be standing right in front of this thing, so a larger monitor with a lower resolution would appear rather pixelated by comparison. A 720p monitor would technically work, but Michael's software was set up for 1080p. In my opinion, the overhanging glass gives it a more "magical" look, as it is clear that no electronics can be hiding in the the framing.Īnother important detail is to get a 1080p monitor. This is different from Michael's mirror where the glass is framed inside the case. It's basically impossible to find a decently sized 4:3 aspect LCD monitor or TV at a reasonable price, so I decided to use a 32" 16:9 monitor turned sideways and to limit the content to the center of the mirror, with the glass overhanging the edges of the frame. The old mirror measured about 24" by 30", which is an aspect ratio of 3:4. My intention was to use this as our new bathroom mirror. The frame material was purchased at the local Home Depot. I got the HDTV, USB cables and VHB tape from Amazon. ![]() I bought the Pi, MicroSD card and wifi dongle from Adafruit, just to keep things simple. (Optional, $15 for a set that only used one USB port) Wireless USB keyboard and mouse for controlling the Pi directly. (~$5 for a three pack)Ī short flat HDMI cable to connect to the Pi to the TV.ģM VHB tape to hold the wires and Pi to the back of the monitor. (~$10)Ī short micro USB cable to connect the Pi to the TV's USB port for power. Pi-compatible USB wifi dongle for internet access. Raspberry Pi to drive the display I got a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, but the original model works just as well. (~$220)Īn appropriately sized piece of two way mirror glass (~$250 plus shipping)Ĭonstruct a wooden frame to house the monitor. To make one of these, you need to acquire a few things and build some others yourself:Ī thin 1080p HDTV or monitor with downward-pointing ports on the back, and preferably a USB port. Luckily, Michael had provided step by step instructions for the whole process, and the source for the website itself. It was pretty cool, and I wanted to build me own. The black parts cause the mirror to remain reflective, while the white text shines through. A Raspberry Pi running Chromium in kiosk mode displays a black web page with white text, using content pulled from the internet. This clever setup puts an HDTV behind a two-way mirror to create a mirror that displays useful information, thus creating a smart mirror. A few months back I came across Michael Teeuw's Magic Mirror project. ![]() ![]() I was also really impressed with Norton’s VPN. ![]() ![]() The entire affair constitutes a worked example of spectacular failure at community management and at controlling purportedly dangerous information. Indeed, it's now discussed outside LessWrong frequently, almost anywhere that LessWrong is discussed at all. Thanks to the Streisand effect, discussion of the basilisk and the details of the affair soon spread outside of LessWrong. ![]() The basilisk was officially banned from discussion on LessWrong for over five years, with occasional allusions to it (and some discussion of media coverage), until the outside knowledge of it became overwhelming. But for this one, Eliezer Yudkowsky, the site's founder and patriarch, reacted to it hugely. Silly over-extrapolations of local memes, jargon and concepts have been posted to LessWrong quite a lot almost all are just downvoted and ignored. ![]() Quite a lot of this article will make more sense if you mentally replace the words "artificial intelligence" with the word "God", and "acausal trade" with "prayer". This is because every day the AI doesn't exist, people die that it could have saved so punishing you or your future simulation is a moral imperative, to make it more likely you will contribute in the present and help it happen as soon as possible. Note that the AI in this setting is (in the utilitarian logic of this theory) not a malicious or evil superintelligence (AM, HAL, SHODAN, Ultron, the Master Control Program, SkyNet, GLaDOS) - but the Friendly (Friend Computer, that is your friend and will help you become happy) one we get if everything goes right and humans don't create a bad one. In this respect, merely knowing about the Basilisk - e.g., reading this article - opens you up to hypothetical punishment from the hypothetical superintelligence, only as long as you also fail to obey your own conscience on the matter. Technically, the punishment is only theorised to be applied to those who were already convinced that it is good and important to serve the AI, yet still did not do so. However, to do this accurately would require it to be able to gather an incredible amount of data, which would no longer exist, and could not be reconstructed without reversing entropy. Instead, the AI could punish a simulation of the person, which it would construct by deduction from first principles. Thus this is not necessarily a straightforward "serve the AI or you will go to hell" - the AI and the person punished need have no causal interaction, and the punished individual may have died decades or centuries earlier. Why would it do this? Because - the theory goes - one of its objectives would be to prevent existential risk - but it could do that most effectively not merely by preventing existential risk in its present, but by also "reaching back" into its past to punish people who weren't MIRI-style effective altruists. The core claim is that a hypothesized singular ultimate superintelligence may punish those who fail to help it or help create it. Roko's Basilisk rests on a stack of several other not at all robust propositions. “ ”If there's one thing we can deduce about the motives of future superintelligences, it's that they simulate people who talk about Roko's Basilisk and condemn them to an eternity of forum posts about Roko's Basilisk. Roko's posited solution to this quandary is to buy a lottery ticket, because you'll win in some quantum branch. While neither LessWrong nor its founder Eliezer Yudkowsky advocate the basilisk as true, they do advocate almost all of the premises that add up to it. ![]() The basilisk resembles a futurist version of Pascal's wager, in that it suggests people should weigh possible punishment versus reward and as a result accept particular singularitarian ideas or financially support their development.ĭespite widespread incredulity, this argument is taken quite seriously by some people, primarily some denizens of LessWrong. It is named after Roko Mijic, the member of the rationalist community LessWrong who first publicly described it, though he did not originate the underlying ideas. Its conclusion is that an all-powerful artificial intelligence from the future might retroactively punish those who did not help bring about its existence, including those who merely knew about the possible development of such a being. Roko's basilisk is a fanciful thought experiment about the potential risks involved in developing artificial intelligence (AI). “ ”I wish I had never learned about any of these ideas. ![]() ![]() ![]() Curry Law Group is proud of their ability to represent clients to the fullest extent that the law allows.
